Butterfly Circulation, 2018

For this project I was supposed to choose only one type of color and generate an outcome for it. I chose Blue-Green, actually it’s a special color which ranges from blue to green.

Following the initial stage of the color project, I gained more feelings and cognitions of the color Blue-Green. It constantly ranges from blue to green, which resembles a circulation for me. Therefore I combines this color with the concept of circulation and designed the book.

I drew this illustrations by myself, initially with pencil and paper, then scanned those images. I used frenchfold for all the pages and insert colorful translucent films, let them overlayed on each other to show the gradient color from blue to green.

Besides the initial impression, Blue-Green also made me feel kind of gloomy, might because that it’s a cool color rather than a warm one. Then with this internal emotion, I chose some occasions which could be romantic but also adorned with sadness.

For instance, the whale fall. After the end of life, a whale’s body will slowly sink to the bottom of the sea. As the huge scale of the body, it could become a nutritious place for other creatures in the underwater environment. A whale could devour numerous aquatic lives during the lifetime, but in the end, its body will feed the ocean in return. Therefore a circulation has been built.

There are also other metaphors of circulations, from the moon phase to the migration of goose, also the butterfly circulation.
